THE SACRED VOLCANO WHERE THE
GOD LIVES
According to local legend, the people of Tengger are descendants of the Majapahit Princes. They believe that the sacred Mount Bromo is not only the home of their God, Sang Hyang Widhi but also their ancestors. Every year on the 14th day in the month of Kasada, they held the holy ceremony at Luhur Poten Temple. Lying at the foot of Mount Bromo, Tenggerese prays for blessing and peaceful life under the moonlight. This ritual ends by throwing the offerings into the Crater of Bromo such as greens, animals, jewelry, and money.
The origin of the Kasada Ceremony comes from the old tale about childless King Joko Seger and Queen Roro Anteng. This couple prayed to Sang Hyang Widhi for a child. God heard their prayer and gave them not only one but twenty-five children. But, the last child should be sacrificed to him. After time had passed, King Joko Seger and Queen Roro Anteng refused to fulfill their promise and ran away from the wrath of God. Suddenly, the volcano rumbled, God chased them and put their last child inside the crater. Immediately, the volcano back to silence.
