Guide about how to move in Indonesia

Move between the islands

Boat

The local ferries that link the various islands to each other are super cheap, although not very fast. There are also more expensive ones but they take less time, they are the fast boats that on certain occasions are highly recommended to avoid a thousand hours on the boat.

You will need them both to link large islands (such as from Bali to Java) and to go to the small islands around the larger ones (such as to go from Lombok to the Gilis). The best option to compare prices is to go directly to the area where they leave from and ask and compare prices.

Between Lombok and Flores, the cruise to Komodo National Park is a good option to enjoy the sea and snorkel.

Plane

The planes between the islands are the most comfortable and fastest option to go from one to another. Most flights have one-way prices of less than €100.

Bus

Without a doubt, the cheapest way to get around Indonesia is by bus. The local buses do not leave until they are full and if they do, keep in mind that they will stop every two to three.

There are also Minivans that are often used by foreigners. It is more expensive but it takes you from one destination to another without stops. They are the ones that can be hired in the accommodations and they take you directly to your accommodation in the city (or town) of your destination.

Bemo

Between the small bus and large tuk-tuk. There are various sizes, some that are closer to the bus and others closer to the tuk-tuk. They are used both for urban transport and intercity line transport (but not long distances), they are very cheap.

Trishaw

They are bikes with a couple of seats in front. It is usually a cheap method of getting around the cities, the pace of the bike helps to see the cities in a different way.

Motorcycle

There are two ways to go by motorcycle: renting the motorcycle or having someone take you as a taxi, but on a motorcycle, that is, motorcycle-taxi.

Taxi

The most comfortable option to get around are taxis and also the most expensive. Most of the time you have to negotiate the price of the ride (before boarding). To go from one town to another there are also individuals who act as taxis. An alternative option to taxi is to use Uber or Grab.
